Spring Bike Checklist - To Do List Before You Ride

The Ultimate Spring Bike Checklist: What to Check Before You Ride

Here are a few quick tips to help you ease back into the riding season;

  1. Don’t assume your bike is ready to go without checking everything out first;
  • Check your tire pressures and condition – tires will loose 3 – 5 psi pre-month in storage so you could have to flat tire. A worn or old tire (https://www.tirebuyer.com/education/how-to-determine-the-age-of-your-tires) does not grip the same as a newer tire with good tread. • Battery health – if you aren’t using a battery tender you should bring your battery in to us so we can charge it up for you and make sure it is in good health.
  • Engine oil – if you didn’t change the oil before you stored the bike check it again before you start the bike in the spring & call us to book your spring oil change service. Check under the bike where it was stored to make sure there are no oil leaks.
  • Lights – humidity can get into the electrical system over the winter and bulbs can fail.
  • Controls; levers and cables – make sure they move smoothly and when you start the engine make sure the idle speed doesn’t change when you turn the bars from left to right.
  • License plate – when was your birthday and is your sticker up to date? Don’t get caught with an expired sticker!
  1. Be aware;
  • Car drivers forget about us over the winter and can do stupid things in front and behind us so be extra defensive!
  • Road surfaces are slicker because of the sand and salt that was laid down over the winter so don’t be thinking about dragging your knees in the corners quite yet!
  • The road is cold so your tires will not get up to temperature to give you good grip.
  1. Get yourself ready;
  • At 5 degrees C when you are going 100 km/hr, the wind chill is around -5 degrees. http://www.candac.ca/candac/Outreach/Teacher_Resources_Index/tri/31.pdf
  • Make sure you dress well. We have a great selection of cold weather riding gear and heated clothing at -25% off.
  • Riding in cold temperatures increases your body’s demand for energy so it is important to take a brake to eat something and to hydrate. Carry granola bars and bottled water in your tank bag or saddle bags.
